Photo Reinterpretation

"The Creation of a Strange Relationship"

Reflection

I was first inspired by seeing other artists replacing people in classical paintings with different characters such as characters in movies or books. Therefore, I wanted to do the same thing, however I went for a different approach. Instead of replacing the people with human characters, I went with the decision of using the characters from the muppets to create more humour, in which was the direction I was heading for. In the end, I chose "The Creation of Adam" painted by Michelangelo because while I was searching up classical paintings, I was also picturing the muppets in the poses of the people. So when I saw Michelangelo's painting, I instantly pictured Kermit in Adam's pose and it made me laugh. As a result, I knew this painting would be the best to reflect a sense of humour with the muppets due to the poses of the people.

I first started off by looking at the painting and doing a quick and simple sketch of it with the Muppets in my sketchbook. It was done very lightly and quickly because as a base plan, it didn't need much effort and detail. On the drawing I have also wrote down notes as a reminder of what should be added to the drawing.

(eg. Adding filture and black edges)

Then after having the essential idea and sketch down, I transitioned to work on the computer with my tablet, where most of the work would be done.

The progress on the computer contained layers of drawings that built up upon the final result.

I first started off with the positions of the people in the painting, then on top of that, redrew the Muppet characters with basic construction. Next came the clean lines, colour, shade, backgound and filter.

Since the painting represents God giving breath to Adam, the first man, it revolves around the themes of life and new beginnings, I started off not knowing how I wanted to change the meaning. All I wanted to focus was on changing the characters to the Muppets to create humour. Throughout the progress of drawing, it as though appeared that the themes of humour and also love was seen in my drawing. This can be seen through Kermit and Miss Piggy, since they have a relationship with each other. Therefore, I interpretated it as a new beginning of a very odd yet unique relationship, along with hints of humour from just the way Kermit is sitting and the extra characters on the side.

There were also some personal experiences that influenced my drawing. One of the main reasons is because during the time the assignment was introduced, I watched the Muppets and I remembered how the Mupppest played a part in shaping my childhood by bringing laughter. Therefore, I wanted to dedicate my work towards how much these childhood memories mean for me because each aspect of my past played a little part in shaping who I am today. As a result, I wanted to play with the themes of humour as influenced how the Muppets brought fond memories to me in the past.
